Headlines - Player Haters
It's safe to say that a wealthy kid from the suburbs can play Grand Theft Auto without turning to a life of crime, but a poor kid might not be so fortunate.

[Daily Show] Video Games in Congress Empty My thoughts...

Post  Shadow Sat Mar 08, 2008 10:53 pm

These comic parodies always seem to make satirical value judgments on today's news and events. Game violence and explicit content is always an issue in Congress, talks have brought forth action such as ID-ing or "carding" at retail stores across the nation. As games become more real, they seem to hit closer to home. This could be why, the side-scrolling platformer never caused any harm. What about the drug metaphor in Super Mario, where using power ups like mushrooms to defeat enemies can be misconstrued (enemies that are hallucinations incited by the "magic" characteristic of the drug). How deeply can we consider games? The video comments on games like Grand Theft Auto being excessively violent and suggestive. More so to those children in poverty versus those who are in more affluent neighborhoods, who seem to know better. Yea, right.

What do you think? How influential are games, do they really make us do wrong, or is it our environment, maybe a combination of both?

Let's hear your opion on this...
